2015 Homework

Week 8
Countdown to Christmas
Your homework this week is to think about the lead up to Christmas.  Here is a list of kind acts for you to choose from.  Try and do one each day.  Record what you have done and explain how you felt when you did it.
Give a gift to a child in hospital
Let someone behind you in line go first.
Do some baking and give some to a neighbour or elderly friend
Pick up litter
Pay someone a compliment
Say a prayer for someone
Donate unwanted toys or clothes to a charity shop
Give some pet food to the SPCA
Pick some flowers and give them to someone you think needs cheering up
Offer to help someone with a task
Write a note of thanks to someone you appreciate
Make a Christmas card for someone

You might be able to think of other good ideas of your own to add to this list.

Week 7
Create a new biscuit following the instructions below, then design a magazine advertisement to sell them.

Week 6

Choose any four of the activities from the list below.  If you are in the Ahurei group, you are excused from homework this week.

Week 5
This week will be devoted to carrying out research.

RE: find out everything you can about Saint Medard and write a brief summary of his life.

Topic - lots of places in Rotorua have small stands with tourist brochures on them.  Collect 3 or 4 and compare them.  What information do they include?  Which ones do you think do the best job? Why?  You will need this information to help you with your review task.

This is the homework for Week 4.  Choose 4 activities that interest you.

Oh dear!  I think several people have misunderstood how the homework works this term.  The page below is not the homework for this term, it is the homework for WEEK 2 - it says that at the top.  As I said in class, homework will be different every week this term.  If you only did 1 task in week 2, don't worry, you will still get your tick.  Make sure you read the instructions carefully every week because it will not always be the same.

Week 3
Writing
Go back through the entries on the blog for this year.  Find one event or activity that you enjoyed and write a review.  Your review should follow the format/structure of the reviews we have been writing in class.  Add your review as a comment under the event or activity you have chosen.
Challenge
How many individual items can you fit in a standard matchbox?  Each item must be different - you can't just fill the box with 100s and 1000s!!  Each item must be complete (not a piece of something).

Go to the spelling page for spelling information.

Week 2
There are 9 tasks on the chart below.  Choose 4 tasks that you like the look of and complete.  If you cannot see the worksheet clearly below, there will be a copy on the board in Room 3.  You will also need to check the Spelling tab for spelling words and homework.

Homework and spelling will start in week 2.  This week, make sure you have completed your holiday reading log and have everything you need for a successful term.

Week 9
All climate comparison charts are due on Monday.  Remember, this was a compulsory task and everyone will need to hand theirs in.

We had disappointing results in our spelling test last week.  Make sure you learn your words this week.

Week 8

Everyone should be continuing to collect data for the climate chart.  We are still having problems with the comments boxes. :(
Hopefully we can get that sorted out soon.
Only 2 weeks left to complete your Term 3 homework.

Week 7
Please make sure that if you are submitting your homework via your google account, that you have enabled comments.  I cannot leave you a comment if the comment box is not working!  I have found that when people share their work, the comments box sometimes works but not when it is in their folder.  Homework, and in fact any work, does not need to be shared with me.  It should be put straight into the correct folder (after checking the comments are working!).

Everyone has been given a climate comparison chart that needs to be filled in for the next two weeks.  You can fill in the details using the computers before school if you are unable to do this at home.

Your spelling words are all words that you will be using for either the Long walk to water task or for our climate study.  Make sure you learn them well.

Week 4
We have talked about water cycle models in class today.  If you are bringing materials in on Weds, these photos might remind you of what you could bring.

I am very disappointed to report that Samuel Rush was the only student in Group C who read the blog and knew he needed to get a spelling worksheet from me in Week 3.  Well done Samuel.  If you are in Group C, you need to make sure you are doing everything you can to improve your spelling skills.  This week, all groups have a worksheet to collect.  Spelling work needs to be done on the sheet and pasted in your homework book.  Writing the words with a pen helps you remember them.

This week is Maths Week.  There will be a number of maths challenges taking place in the senior school this week.

Week 3
If you want to have a go at making the Glazed Turnips we had today, here is the recipe.

3 cups diced peeled turnip
 1/4 cup water
1 cube chicken bouillon
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoons white sugar

Place the turnips into a skillet with the water and chicken bouillon cube over medium heat, and simmer until the water has evaporated and the turnips are tender, about 15 minutes. Stir in the butter, let melt, and sprinkle on the sugar. Gently cook and stir the turnips until the butter and sugar cook into a brown, sticky coating on the turnips, about 10 minutes. Serve hot

Homework
All Homework should be saved in your Homework folder online, or you can still work in your homework book and hand in on Friday.  You do not need to share your work with me.  If it is in the Homework folder, I can see it.  Please make sure you have allowed comments or I am unable to respond.

Spelling
Group C - collect a worksheet from Mrs Todd on Monday.  All other students - choose 6 words from your list.  Write a short story and include those 6 words in the text.

Don't forget - you need to complete Word of the Week and one of the grid tasks to get your tick on the homework chart.

I am also keeping a note of who is working on IXL.  Nearly half the class really need to work on their times tables in order to know them well.

All homework should be loaded into your new Homework folder.  If you prefer to write in your homework book and hand that in, I have no problem with that.  Homework is due on Friday regardless of which way you submit it.

At the moment, students should be working on fractions and times tables on IXL.  I receive a report from IXL every week so I can see who has been working hard.

I expect everyone to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every day.  It does not matter what you read - that is up to you.

This term, we also have the Word of the Week.  Please look at the template to make sure you include everything required.

Your spelling words will be on the Spelling Tab as usual.  Make sure you check to see what group you are in this term.

Below is our Term 3 Homework grid.  You can complete these in any order but you need to hand in one each week from weeks 2 -8.
Make a terrarium and grow at least one plant.  Go to www.stormthecastle.com/terrarium/soda-bottle-terrarium.htm for ideas
Upload a photo into your homework folder.
Write a simple explanation of an animal life cycle.  Include pictures or diagrams to help explain the cycle.
Research the house you belong to at St Mary’s.  Who, what or where is your house named after?  Hint for Mill Hill – look in the Church foyer.

Research traditional Maori food.  Find a recipe and try it out.  Give it a rating out of 10.  Include the recipe in your folder and a photo if possible.
Keep a personal water usage tally for a week.  Use the chart and information in the file shared with you for this task.
Giving service to others. How could you help a group or organisation in our community?  Come up with a proposal to help someone in need.

Go to http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html and try out some of the water experiments.  Ask for permission from an adult before you start anything messy!
Try growing seeds on cotton wool.  Record the procedure – include photos and write your observations. Does this method require more or less water than seeds grown in soil?
Invent a way to keep a matchbox dry when immersed in water. Test various designs until you are happy with the result.  What should you include in the matchbox to make it a mini survival kit?

Week 9
Please make sure you read all the notices so that you know what you need to be doing this week.

How many people will complete all their homework this term and earn a certificate for their Page of Pride??  You have two weeks left to work on the grid items.

Spelling

This week we have the 100 word spelling test to see how much you have improved over the term.  Look through all the list words for your group and practice the ones you found a bit tricky or got wrong.  Please collect a worksheet from Mrs Todd on Monday.

Week 8
Remember that you need to complete 8 boxes from the homework grid by week 10.  Some people are well on track to do just that.
Don't forget your reading bingo, image of the week and spelling every week.
Week 7
Well done to those students who are filling in their reading bingo card.  As we have discussed in class, regular reading helps not only with writing and spelling, but is also extremely important is you want to get better at maths.

Start thinking about your renewable energy display.  What have you got at home that could be useful?  Have you had a look through your recycling?  We won't start putting the models together until next week but you can start bringing items in on Friday in readiness for this.
 Week 7/8 spelling

Read the instructions carefully on the page so that you know what the task is.

Week 4
Please make sure you are reading the instructions carefully for the Image of the Week.
Because I was away sick all last week, I will mark week 3 homework before school so that we can still do Homeworkopoly on Monday.  Everyone should have handed in their homework on Friday as usual.

Week 3

Please read all the information below carefully.
This week, we begin our Sustainability homework.  You need to choose one box to complete each week - complete in any order. Write the number of the box you have worked on in your homework book so that it is clear to me what you have done. There are 10 boxes and you need to complete and hand in work from 8 boxes.

Image of the Week.  This will generally be related to something we have been studying or talking about in class.  Go to the Image of the Week tab and follow the instructions on the page.  I will go over this in class on Monday.  You will need to submit your answer via your Google account - other learning areas please.  If you have trouble doing that from home, you may put your response in your homework book.
Continue to fill in your Reading Bingo chart.  We have a few people who have already completed one whole line.  Well done.
Spelling

We are getting some good results this term.  Collect this week's worksheet from me on Monday.

Week 2
Last week we made Anzac Biscuits.  Do some research into the origins of Anzac biscuits and write a paragraph about it.
Find one other popular recipe from WW1 and give it a try.  Did you like it? Would you make it again?
What was different about food then?  What was similar?  Compare two popular foods - one from now and one from WW1 - using a Venn diagram.
Did you go to one of the Anzac services over the weekend?  What was the thing you will remember most about it?  If you did not go, what did you see on the news that you found interesting?

During the war, the most precious things to soldiers were letters and parcels from home.  Using an empty matchbox, create a small parcel for a WW1 soldier.  Include a letter with news from home and a small picture (or photo if you have one small enough).  What else should you include?  You will need to imagine that this is a full sized parcel and include miniature examples of things people really would have sent.  Use your imagination and think about the things we have learned about the War.

Cool Homework Dioramas on PhotoPeach

Some great Term 1 Homework.

Homework will be issued in class on Monday.  A copy will also be posted here in case anyone mislays their copy.
Choose any 8 boxes to complete during weeks 2-9 of this term.  Both activities from one box must be handed in for marking each week.  In addition, you will be expected to read a book of your choice for at least 15 minutes every day.
Most fairy tales date back to Medieval times. Retell a well known Fairy Tale in your own words.

King Arthur and his knights conduct their meetings while seated around his famous Round Table. They sit evenly spaced around the table and in numerical order. If knight number 7 is sitting directly across from knight number 17, how many knights are seated at the table with King Arthur?
Royal feasts include several courses, typically beginning with soup and ending with a dessert. Here are some menu choices for the feast. The cook must select one item from each category. 1.How many different meals can the cook prepare using these choices? 2. What would happen if you added a beverage choice?
Soup
Salad
Entree
Dessert
Oxen
Dandelion
Veal in sauce
Cherry pottage
Fish
Lemon
Trout
Bread Pudding

Spinach
Venison

Create an A-Z list to brainstorm things you know about Medieval communities
Use a compare and contrast map to look at the similarities and differences between a castle and the Warehouse

In the royal dining room, Queen Isabelle likes to line up square tables from end to end and make one long rectangular table so that the entire royal family can dine together. 1. If each side of a square table seats 1 person, how many square tables are needed to seat all 20 members of the royal family? 2. If the royal family were having 29 guests for dinner; how many more square tables would be needed? What if 35 dinner guests were coming?
Start with the answer The Black Death and list 5 questions which could be linked with that answer only.

Make a medieval village diorama in a shoe box.  Be sure to include the home of the character you are studying.
How many different endings can you think of for the story of Jack and the Beanstalk?

Medieval food.  Find a recipe and try it out.  Give it a rating out of 10.  Include the recipe in your book. Should we include this in our Medieval banquet?
Create a 6 frame storyboard of a well known Bible story. Remember to use pictures and text.

Research a community.  This could be a community of people or animals.  Write a one page report.
Create a list with as many verbs as you can think of to describe the way a person or animal moves.

The Norman kings of England were the feudal lords over large areas of French territory. The French rulers wanted to rule over their own land. The French became furious when King Edward III of England claimed to be king of France as well. In their anger, the French invaded territory held by the English in 1337. And so began an on-again, off-again war between England and France, which lasted over one hundred years. The long struggle between France and England became known as the Hundred Years' War. The Hundred Years' War did not end until 1453, when the French drove the English from the city of Bordeaux, France.
How long did the Hundred Years' War actually last?
Design a magazine advert for one of the following:
A new type of cart, wooden shoes (clogs), a spinning wheel, a cooking pot.
Gather together some examples of adverts from newspapers and magazines to help you get ideas.

Research your surname.  What are the origins of your name?  Most names relate to a place, an occupation or a characteristic.  Find out more.
Make up a card game that would help young children practice their spelling. Your game can be anything you want it to be. One idea is to do a 'snap' game. You could have cards with pictures of different things on them and the children would have to shout 'snap' when the things on the cards began with the same letter. Or 'snap' might be shouted out when the things began or ended with the same sounds, e.g. tree, trousers.
Create a stained glass window picture depicting a medieval scene.
