Week 3

Collect a worksheet from Mrs Todd on Tuesday.  Not many people got 100% correct in week 2 so learn your words well this week.

As I mentioned in class, the spelling groups remain the same this term.  Well done to those students who have had a big improvement in their spelling skills.  Everyone who did well in our test was proof that practice does help!!

This week, I want you to use one of the strategies you used last term to practice your words.  Look at the instructions in Week 5 of last term if you need a reminder.

 Spelling is a bit different this week.  We discovered on Thursday that quite a large number of students in the class do not know how to count to 10 in Te Reo.  Use the chart below to learn how to say and spell 1-10 this week and 11-20 next week.  If you are not sure about the pronunciation, have a look and listen to this clip on youtube.

Week 5
 I want to see more names on the chart this week.  How can you learn your words more effectively?  Come up with a method of your own or choose one of the ideas below.

Write your words around the outside of a paper. Keep going until you get to the middle.
Write each of your words 3 times to make a triangle.
Write every word 3 times in a different colour.
Create a wordsearch.
Write a rhyming word for every word in your list.
Lay on your back with your feet in the air. Use your toe to write your spelling words in the air.
Write your spelling words in your homework book and draw a picture beside each one to illustrate what it means.
Week 4

I am very disappointed to report that Samuel Rush was the only student in Group C who read the blog and knew he needed to get a spelling worksheet from me in Week 3.  Well done Samuel.  If you are in Group C, you need to make sure you are doing everything you can to improve your spelling skills.  This week, all groups have a worksheet to collect.  Spelling work needs to be done on the sheet and pasted in your homework book.  Writing the words with a pen helps you remember them.

Read the instructions carefully so that you know what the task is.

Identify any words in your list that we have learned the spelling rule for.  Explain what the rule is.  Choose 6 words from your list and create a word family.  You might include suffixes, prefixes, different tenses, homophones, homographs etc.  Be as detailed as you can for each word.

Spelling - week 3/4

This week you will need to focus on any words you got wrong in the test on Friday. In the weeks you do not have a worksheet, you can go to http://www.kidsspell.com/index.php and click on Create a Custom list. Type your words into the box.  Name your list with the week name (Week 4 for example).  Click on the list to select and play any of the spelling games.  Maybe you could choose a different game each day.   If you did not finish the worksheet, you will need to hand it in this Friday.  

These are your words to learn over 2 weeks.  We will be having a test every Friday.  You will need to collect a worksheet from Mrs Todd on Monday.  On some of your worksheets you will see a reference to morphographs. A morphograph is a part of a word.  For example, understand can be broken up into un der stand.  If you know how to break a word up into syllables, you already know how to work with morphographs!
